BASIC FRENCH COURSE THIRD SESSION

BASIC FRENCH COURSE. THIRD SESSION 26/04/2015

                                        FRENCH INDEFINITE ARTICLES

                                         LES ARTICLES INDÉFINIS.

In English , the indefinite articles are " a" and " an ".  In French the indefinite articles in singular form are " un " and " une" .  The first one for masculine nouns and the second one for feminine. It is easy to understand. Study the following examples.

Un cahier , un livre, un garçon , un village, un mur
A notebook , a book, a boy, a village, a wall
Une chaise, une femme, une ville, une maison
A chair, a woman,a city, a house

The indefinite article for plural nouns is " des ".  Study the following examples.
Des cahiers, des livres, des garçons, des villages, des murs, des chaises, des femmes, des femmes, des villes, des maisons
( some) notebooks, books,boys,villages,walls,chairs,women,cities,houses.

                                          FRENCH CONTRACTED ARTICLES

                                          LES ARTICLES CONTRACTÉS

À. and DE. are two important prepositions in French. " à." means. " to " or " at". " De" means " from " or " of ". When these prepositions are followed by the definite articles le and les, we get new forms  known as " contracted articles " .
à + le ='au
à + les = aux
De +le = du
De + les = des

For example If  you want to say  " to the market " ,  you should write

à +le+ marché = au marché
à + le + cinéma = au cinéma
à +le + parc = au parc

à+ les + villages = aux villages
à + les + amis = aux amis

Similarly in respect of the preposition " de " the following contracted articles are formed.
For example, if you want to say " of the boy " or " of the boys "

De+ le + garçon = du garçon
de + les + garçons = des garçons

                                      PARTITIVE ARTICLES/ LES ARTICLES PARTITIFS
The partitive articles are peculiar to French language. Whenever the quantity of a thing is uncertain , we use the partitive articles. We can translate the French partitive articles into English as " some ". Their form is given below.

de  + le = du
de +  les = des
De + la = de la

" du " is placed before masculine singular nouns to mean some.

Du café = some coffee
Du  lait = some milk
Des légumes =  some vegetables

When you want to say , " I drink tea " in French , you have necessarily to put partitive article
which indicates un uncertain quantity  or a part of the whole.

Je bois du thé . I drink some tea.   Le thé = tea
Je mange du pain. I eat some  bread.  Le pain = bread
Je mange des légumes . I eat some vegetables.

                                                 LES.  ADJECTIFS. DÉMONSTRATIFS

"CE" means " this".  It is used for masculine singular nouns. Study the following examples.

Ce livre  - this book, ce garçon - this boy , ce stylo - this pen

" CETTE" means " this ". It is used for feminine singular nouns.  Study the following examples.

Cette fille - This girl, cette chaise - This chair , Cette voiture - This car

" CES" means "  these " and is used for all nouns in plural form irrespective of the gender.

Ces livres - these books, Ces filles -  these girls ,  Ces voitures - These cars

But when  a masculine singular noun begins with a vowel or " h" mute , we should use " CET".  Study the following examples.

Cet homme, Cet endroit , cet appartement,  ( This man, this place , this apartment )

Please practise on  the above lines for all the nouns which you study in this course.

POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES.  ( MY, YOUR, ...)
                                                 LES ADJECTIFS  POSSESSIFS

Masculine Feminine Plural
my mon ma mes
your ton ta tes
his, her, its son sa ses
our notre notre nos
your votre votre vos
their leur leur leurs

Remember  the possessive adjective " my " has three forms in French. It depends on the gender and number of the things possessed and not on the possessor. Study the following examples.

My book - mon livre  (  " livre " is masculine singular )
My books - mes livres ( " livres " is plural)
My  car - ma voiture ( " voiture " is feminine singular )
My cars - mes voitures ( " voitures " is feminine plural )

Their car          - leur voitures
Their cars -       leurs voitures

I hope the above examples help you understand possessive adjectives clearly.

                                           FRENCH  DEFINITE ARTICLES

In English the definite article is " the " . But in French , the definite articles take the following forms.  " Le, la, les and L' ".

The reason is that the article which you put depends on the number and gender of the nouns before which is put; and also on the fact whether the noun begins with a vowel or " h" mute.
Generally , before every noun a definite article is put. What is the meaning of definite article ?

Le pomme   - the apple . It means in a general sense all apples.

Le chien.  - it means in a general sense all dogs. Note that in English , a definite article is not needed before a noun when used in a general sense.  Study the following examples.

Le serpent est  venimeux .

Snakes are poisonous .

But in French definite article is a must.

The names of the countries are preceded by definite articles in French unlike the case in English language .  Countries are either masculine or feminine in French. Study the following examples.

L' Inde, le Pakistan , les États - Unis, la France, L'Angleterre , le Canada.
I have given you a list of  countries  in French . Please go through the list.

The names of the rivers are preceded by definite articles in French .

La Seine , La Garonne , Le Rhône, la Loire

The names of the mountains in French are preceded by definite articles . Study the following examples.

Le Mont Blanc, les Alpes , le Himalayas , les Andes, le Mont Everest, le Kilimandjaro

When body parts are referred , the definite articles are used.

Je me lave les hands.

I wash my hands.

Note that in French, you should not use possessive adjectives to refer to body parts.

The dates are preceded by " le"

le 25 avril 2015

When we habitually do something on a particular week day , we can use " le".

Je vais à la piscine le dimanche .

I go to  swimming pool on Sundays.

To be continued.

FRENCH THROUGH SKYPE

Many learners  have difficulty in pronunciation of French sounds.  Some French sounds do not exist in English and some other languages. The articulation of French sounds is a matter of practice. Learners should make it a habit to listen to French audio / video , a great tool in learning any foreign language.  I am offering a 20 hrs. Basic French Course on one to one basis through Skype with main emphasis on spoken French. Those who are interested to pursue this basic course may get in touch with me.

BASIC FRENCH COURSE -FOURTH / FIFTH SESSIONS

The fourth and fifth session of the Basic French Course was conducted as planned on 2 /5. and 3/5 at the Indian Institute of World Culture, Bangalore. Of course there were some absentees. And disappointed I was to note that they missed the class. Be that as it may, the regulars were very enthusiastic as usual. I took up around fifteen basic verbs and explained their uses to them. The conjugation of the First group of French verbs was explained. The rule is very simple. They grasped it without any difficulty. While giving them examples of the use of verbs , gradually new words were introduced.  The partitive article was explained. The possessive adjectives were explained with many examples and students grasped them . While teaching, the learners were asked to repeat several times. Much emphasis was placed on correct pronunciation . In the fifth session, maximum time was devoted to asking questions in French. So far 18 exercises were prepared for them . I enjoy every minute of my work.
